Ironically for a community that has pioneered renewable energy – until the wind proved too much for its wind turbine – it has been left dependent on one 25kw diesel generator, providing rationed power from 7.30am to midnight.
Now thanks to a lottery fund grant of just under £200,000, for the first time the Foula Electricity Trust will soon be able to provide a reliable and affordable electricity scheme across the island, 20 miles west of Shetland.
At last the lights will stay on for Foula’s 32 folk (via The Herald)

Looks like the hurricane might just barely miss us here in Miami. Maybe.
This is the biggest evacuation ordered since 1999, when Hurricane Floyd brushed Florida's east coast and prompted officials to urge about 1.3 million to evacuate, a record for the state. 800,000 in Charley's Path Told to Flee (via Yahoo! News)

Municipally owned Cleveland Public Power improved its ability to generate emergency power for the water system. Ciaccia said CPP failed to provide the backup power during the blackout. The water division also has rented one backup generator at a cost of $500,000 a year until permanent generators are installed. Cleveland water system is improved but still vulnerable (via Ohio News Network)

As he watched cellular towers become overloaded and unable to handle all the sudden demand, he heard the emergency generator kicking in.
